At sharreo, we never want to be snobby about wine. We believe in wine for the masses, rather than being snobby or exclusive. So when casually scrolling through Instagram one day, I came across a post that was so bloody brilliant it stopped me in my tracks.
What was this amazing post? I can hear you thinking now, well luckily the creator was nice enough to allow me to include it in this post. Created by Lucy at Partner in Wine, allow me to present 'Champagne & Fries.'
If you haven't heard of Partner in Wine before, it's the best accessory for wine lovers for park dates, picnics or just in the house. Check out their amazing range here.
This triggered an idea in my head, why are there not more basic wine pairings. Cheese is great but why can wine and kebabs not go together? Why can't I enjoy a Sauvignon Blanc with my Subway? So please find your ultimate (tongue in cheek) guide to unusual wine pairings.
These are just meant to be a bit of fun and everyone's taste is different but if you try them out or have your own weird and wonderful pairings, let us know.
1. Peri Peri chicken & Whispering Angel
A slight twist on the 'white wine and chicken' pairing swapping out the white wine for a dry Rose. I think this cuts through the spice a little bit more than your standard white wine although I'm pretty sure they don't sell Whispering Angel at Nando's so one for a takeaway. If you haven't heard of Whispering Angel it's probably more famous for it's brand than it's taste but it's a lovely dry rose - but make sure you serve it SUPER chilled. You can buy a bottle here.
2. Fish & Chips and Fizz (Fizz & Chips)
Another shake up of a classic white wine and fish but not only does this jazz up what is otherwise a very casual meal, the additional bubbles also help off-set the heaviness of the deep fried everything in this meal. No particular recommendation on this one so instead I'm just going to recommend a classic English Sparkling, Chapel Down, available here.
3. KFC & Riesling
Now this one I'm excited about, I'm an absolute sucker for a KFC. It reminds me of evenings spent with my Mum when I used to stay at hers once a week on a Saturday and we'd nearly always share a bucket of KFC and would often have a wine. Now why Riesling? As its one of the more punchier and flavourful grapes I think it nicely offsets the flavours of the secret herbs and spices. Also similar to the fizz and chips, with something so deep fried, the acidity of the Riesling works really well.
4. Burgers & Sangiovese
I know what you're thinking, this isn't that revolutionary as after all it's red wine and red meat. However, what I am recommending is my personal favourite red a Sangiovese. If you haven't had it before it's more fruity than most of the grapes and quite light so works with a burger and doesn't make you feel like a whale or overindulged as much as if you had a heavier grape wine. For my favourite Sangiovese check out Di Majo aka. holiday juice here. If you're asking my favourite burgers are either Bleecker Burger or Lucky Chip.
5. Sauvignon and Taco's
There is absolutely no justification or reasoning behind this one other than we were making taco's and there was a leftover bottle of Oyster Bay in the fridge and it works. You can buy Oyster Bay at pretty much any supermarket or support small businesses by buying from the bottle club here.
