Cocktail recipe #2: I have so much amore-etto for this sours recipe

I'm ashamed to say I was only 31 years old when I had an amaretto sour. Imagine realising that I have wasted the last 15 years of drinking but not drinking these! Weirdly the first time I had one was in a hotel in Jamaica when a bunch of us had flown over for a wedding. Not the traditional Jamaican cocktail but my god, I was hooked. The slight marzipan-ness of the amaretto and the tarte sweetness of the lemon, absolute heaven.

From what I've seen in recipes, traditionally you have amaretto sours with egg white too but the Jamaican ones we had didn't have egg whites. (It was an all inclusive hotel so having to separate egg whites every time someone wanted one would've been a ball ache.) We then tried to make them at home using egg whites and I personally realised that I prefer them with out so try both and see what works for you.

We then tried to create a cheats version of a amaretto sour using lemonade, it was new years eve on the way to a friends house and I'd offered to make them. Then I realised everywhere was out of lemon juice and I had no desire to squeeze 50 lemons so limonata's and traditional lemonade seemed like a great option. Warning: this does not work. Lemonade is too weak and doesn't compliment the amaretto very well. You'll need to either freshly squeeze the lemons (BORING) or buy lemon juice.

This is may be obvious but this is naturally a very sweet cocktail so if you prefer something a bit punchier, check out our recipe for a gin martini (aka. the Heslop turbo martini.)

Ingredients:

  • Amaretto (Disaronno is my fave) buy it here from Spiritly.
  • Lemon juice; check out this great pouch from Sous Chef.
  • Egg white (if you want to) - not going to link to buy eggs
  • A shload of ice

How to make:

  1. In to your cocktail shaker pour two parts Disaronno for one part lemon juice. If you want to add egg white do it at this stage. I'd generally say one per two cocktails.
  2. Add in a shload of ice
  3. Make sure your lid is on your shaker securely and give it a good shakey-shakey
  4. Add more ice to a tumbler (generally short whiskey glasses are good for this) and pour over
  5. Add a cherry if you're fancy
  6. Enjoy!
